The population of Ault, Colorado, as of the census of 2000, there were 1,432 people, 540 households, and 381 families residing in the town. The racial breakdown of the town was 79.47% White, 0.07% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 16.76% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 30.24% of the population.

Ault was established in in 1897 and named after Alexander Ault from Fort Collins, Colorado, who owned the four mill in the village. The town was incorporated in 1904. Ault, Colorado isn't large enough to warrent an alcohol or drug rehab center, but history has shown that small towns are not exempt from alcohol and drug problems, in fact, there is some evidence that they may have a larger problem on a per capita basis that the bigger cities.

In our investigation of drug problems in Ault, itself, we found nothing of significance, but we did find that there are problems in the comunnity that are always associated with alcohol and drug abuse and addiction. We have staff that have lived in Colorado towns that are smaller than Ault and the isolation and lack of police survalence allowed the residents to abuse alcohol and drugs more than those in cities where neighbors will monitor their neighborhoods. The mental health of small, isolated Colorado towns is a problem that can distract from the beauty of the rual, small-town setting. Most people expect to find mental health problems in larger cities, but the percentages of people with alcohol or drug addiction problems in small, rural Colorado, towns like Ault, Colorado have higher percentages of addiction problems than cities like Denver.

The isolation and lack of services in rural Colorado are part of the causes for the addiction problems seen in Ault, Colorado. The main difference is that neighbors in smaller towns know who is having problems and care more than those who get lost in the numbers of people in places like Denver. One does find that small towns take on a dominant culture or ethic. The town of Crestone, Colorado is about 1/3 the size of Ault, but because it has the reputation of being a retreat for "hippies" from the 60's, it may have a higher percentage of marijuana users than Ault.
